When my grandmother died, she left me her diamond ring. I had never had a diamond ring before and enjoyed watching the diamonds glimmer. I’ve noticed, as I watched the colors sparkle, that one type of light makes the diamonds come alive with color. Another light produces only small sparkles. Still another light produces no sparkle at all.
As I watched my ring with fascination, it made me think of ways our lives sparkle. God gave each of us hearts that are filled with treasures over the course of our lives. Some of that filling happens early in our childhood, other happens later. Sometimes we have to throw out some of what is already there to make room for what we have now.
Like my diamond ring, what we store in our hearts shines bright in some light and falls flat in other light. A drive to selfishly accumulate possessions, go on exotic vacations, and drive fancy new cars shines bright in the world’s light, In our heavenly Father’s light they appear very flat. On the other hand, living simply, using our possessions to enable the spreading of the gospel and loving the unlovable with Christ-like love falls flat in the world’s light, but glimmers and glistens in the Father’s light. Whose light do your treasures sparkle in – the world’s or the Father’s?
